He was quiet for a moment, then repeated, "Sorry, man, I can't right now." He paused then added: "My dad can, though." His last word brought a vindication yet disappointment in my belief, as I knew he was fully capable of helping me. With a calmness that comes only from absolute surety I said, "What you mean is that you can but you won't because you've subordinated your autonomy to your wife and other idiotic trivialities. You've chosen different forms of of slavery." There was a small gasp on his end then a surprised, bewildered and angry "What?!" huffed in shock. "Your Father," I went on unperturbed, "has misguided religious beliefs that hold him to an altruistic standard. He has an excuse to do good; all those heavenly rewards await him. I won't take advantage of him for the same reason I won't torture a dumb, innocent cow." "You son of a -" "No, Chris. I asked you because I wanted to see the face of real humanity: hypocritical, self-righteous, narcissistically believing in its own inherent goodness." There was a sharp click and the line went dead along with a much deeper connection that sent me soaring from the blackest depth of crushing atmospheres held by the weight of a mammoth anchor, to the top of turquoise waters. © 2015 Alan B. |
