Echoes

Echoes

A Poem by Isabella Cezanne
"

a poem about longing

"
there's an echo here
of a home
long gone, but
never truly
forgotten

it fades in and
out, absent for
many months
and then back,
as strong and as
steady as the
beating of my
own heart

there's an echo here
like the sound
of their footsteps
bouncing off the walls

except

i'm reminded of
how their footsteps
led away from me
instead of towards
my arms

waiting, watching,
wanting

gone

because after all this
time, those echoes
are just remnants

there's an echo here
and i know what it is,
what else could
it be?

but the echo
of how my own
heart once beat
for them.

and only
them

You have created something very poignant and spare here Isabella. Thoughts of a home can bring back a range of thoughts and an echo is a great metaphor. Your use of the repeated line is very strong.
Well done.
