Broken Family

Broken Family

A Poem by R.L. Underwood

This is my broken family,
we call each other names,
and my little brother is already bullied at school,
and my sister is already self conscious,
and my mother doubts herself,
and I am alone.

My mother calls my sister irresponsible,
and my sister screams "f**k you"
and slams the door,
and my brother hides in his room,
while I sit quiet and say nothing.

My sister lets her boyfriend influence her,
because she needs him to believe she is beautiful,
and my brother still calls her ugly,
because that is his view of himself,
And they make fun of me because I'm quiet,
but how else am I supposed to survive?

My mother blames my father,
for drinking when we needed him most,
and my sister blames my mother for not being stronger,
and my brother was too young to remember,
and I try my best not to remember.

My brother comes home angry from school,
claims every day,
to be the worst day of his life,
and he takes the frustration out on us,
and yells when he does not win the board game,
and we thought he was being a brat,
but I think there is more to that.

Our family time consists of,
sitting together in one room,
each on our phones,
or electronic devices,
avoiding contact with each other.

This is my Broken family,
and I don't remember how it got this way,
I just wish I could go some place knew,
go to a new place,
somewhere that feels like a real home.
