The MonstersA Poem by R.L. UnderwoodThere once were monster that hid in our closets and they were scary and we had to have daddy scare them away We were seven and small so it was only normal to be scared of things unreal And he'd come in and he'd scare the monsters away and then he'd kiss our foreheads he'd tell us that we are safe now and we knew that we were Then we went to school, and we were followed by the monsters but we knew they wouldn't hurt us because they never liked the light So we played outside and we'd go home then we would get ready for bed not remembering the monster till we were getting tucked in and daddy would scare away the monster and we'd got to sleep safe and sound Then one day we woke up and there were monsters in our heads but we we're too old to have daddy scare them away We are seventeen and not so small So it was only normal to be scared of things so real and he'd come out the monster in my mind saying I'm all things I fear most Then we'd go to school and the monsters still followed us and they never touched us but they still hurt us and we'd go home, hiding inside And we couldn't go to bed because we always remembered the monster and no one will tuck us in Not that we asked we're too old to be scared of them The monsters that hide inside my mind © 2014 R.L.
