In Hard TimesA Poem by Cassie MenoRemember when things were so
perfect? I never had a bad thing to say. When I looked in your eyes, I just
knew it: All we ever had to do was pray. I was so young and determined That you could make anything
right. ‘Cause you were my mommy forever And you’d kiss the bad away every
night. But as I got older I realized That things aren’t as easy as they
look. While God’s always there to guide
us, We sometimes get stuck in a nook. And crannies are hard to get out
of, But it’s easier when friends show
the way. And if by some chance we don’t get
what we want, Well, tomorrow’s another day. One day I woke up to find You weren’t as perfect as I
thought. You had just as many unhealed
scars And fantastic wishes that you
sought. It took a while for me to accept That even you can’t heal all
wounds. But eventually I began to believe And seal my expectations up in
tombs. Family are those you depend on When things start to hurt the
most. And no matter the age or relation Family should help you coast. When I realized how much you were
struggling, I wasn’t sure what I could do. In the past you always knew just
what to say. Could I be that helpful too? Remembering the things you have
taught me And the things you made so clear, I know there’s no such thing as
perfect And you can’t avoid every tear. Some things we just have to fight
through, And yes, it will be tough. But I’ll be there every step of
the way As you were when I’d had enough. Nothing can last forever. Things somehow always change. Sometimes things turn completely
upside down But family will always remain in
range. No matter the distance shown on
maps Or the miles spread out between, It won’t ever change that when I
say “I love you” That’s exactly what I mean. © 2011 Cassie MenoAuthor's Note
