Requiem for a War

Requiem for a War

A Poem by Natalie

Requiem for a War

I cannot hear a sound,

So I do not sense the schemes

Beneath the silent ground.

All appears calm.

I sense no danger.

Then it happens.

Could it be a signal?

A hint of what will come?

Tensions grow and grow

Till someone pulls the trigger.

A random clash of force

Fights everything in sight.

I hear the trumpets blow.

The fight gains momentum.

The clinks of swords,
The shouts of motivation,

Fill the ghastly, grim air.

Definitions of friend or foe

No longer matter in war.

Neighbors fight neighbors.

Brothers kill brothers.

But not all passionate hearts bleed.

Most souls do not want to fight.

The bloodthirsty mindset

Has vanished.

No one wants to listen

To war’s gruesome music,

So soldiers are herded

Like cattle to slaughter.

But with all livestock killed

Fight is forever stilled.
