Candles in the Sea

Candles in the Sea

A Poem by Erin Sky
"

an ode to my belov'd cap'n.

"

All the long days

never setting foot upon the quays

of harbour towns.

We had little need to dream of wild woods and rolling downs.

We waged war with sword and gun,

battling the Leviathan.

The roars so long rang

in our ears, driving forth memories of birds that sang.

Yet now silence in my sorrow,

as I remember one free sparrow

Leapt he, free, to do his part

and rend the monster’s heart.

All these long candles held aloft

by hearts, by loss, made soft

Make the sea a crystal phial

to hold a golden sprite awhile.

Until we pass beyond the bordered seas,

where the ship, like the sparrow, is always free.

This is really good! I'm a bit of a sparrow girl myself, and I think this is a beautiful poem. :)
