Diogenes is commonly know as the father of cynicism. He carried a lamp during daylight to draw attention to himself and his quest to find what he believed did not exist, an honest man. Perhaps there is no such thing as honesty and truth based upon his concepts of them. He was quite controversial and seems to have been excessively eccentric. The following is not intended to stigmatize the entirety of his philosophy condemning societal norms. On a lighter note, the middle finger salute is not a "modern" gesture of disdain. Diogenes used it some 400 years before the Christian era. :)
Excerpt from Wikipedia concerning Diogenes:
"Obscenity:
Diogenes taught by living example. He tried to demonstrate that wisdom and happiness belong to the man who is independent of society and that civilization is regressive. He scorned not only family and political social organization, but property rights and reputation. He even rejected normal ideas about human decency. Diogenes is said to have eaten in the marketplace, urinated on some people who insulted him, defecated in the theatre, masturbated in public, and pointed at people with his middle finger."
