I have a gift for you; okay, it's no big deal. It's just a little something you might want to have around when feeling low, when life's just thirty different shades of blue. Afraid the present banged around a bit while I was on the way to meet you here. Two corners rounded off; they look like s**t, the huge dent in between came very near to breaking what I wanted most to give. Be careful of the other pointed end; it's sharp, and I'd be devastated if my battered treasure hurt a trusted friend. Reciprocation's needless, I don't mind; you haven't got the heart to give in kind.
Has the feel of an old country song.
Taken at face value, it's greatly entertaining.
On the other hand, so often, in my life, I have been truly thankful that my betters had not "the heart to give in kind."
Joel, guess this is a winner either way you figure it.
i do love this. i think it's a clever write- kinda sad. But it offers a glimps of healing, hope. never quite sure how to read the ending of this one. on first reading i understood "you haven't got the heart to give in kind" to mean her heart's unlike yours, less damaged. on second reading i wondered if she has a heart at all. depends on how my day's going as to the message i get - superb poem, which ever way i read x
