Never Say Goodbye

Never Say Goodbye

A Poem by Winter of '97
"

A poem about childhood

"

I’ll never say goodbye.

Because saying goodbye means forgetting,

And how could I never let you go?

We played and told stories, fought pirates!

Do you remember how high we soared?

When we could play and never never

Never grow up.

The little wonders of worlds we made,

The dreams we grew,

I will never forget.

You won’t forget either.

Because you were never there to begin with.

I'm trying to grasp the meaning of the last line in the context of the rest of the poem. It's the focal point of the poem but I'm not seeing the speaker building toward it. If the speaker is addressing an imaginary friend, I would've liked a bit more foreshadow to suggest this was the case. If the speaker is making a jaded statement to a childhood friend he's grown apart from, I would've liked to see some references to it in the poem.

I think the poem could benefit from being more specific about the adventures the speaker shared with the friend, since right now it's a bit of a murky haze of ideas for me.

This makes me think of Peter Pan, which was one of my favorite stories as a kid. The ending isn't actually that bad, and kinda adds to the poem. Keep on writing!
