Paying attention

Paying attention

A Poem by Jeannine Winklaar

From the corner of his eye

he sees movement, feet shifting

along the corridor, back and

forth in perfect silence

He senses her breathing

matching his, corresponding

as if planned, but not so  She

is never aware of his presence

Paying attention to every detail

of her being he inhales her as fresh

air is needed to survive  She pauses

for a moment, questioning

as if hearing something in the

distance; holding her breath

It seems like hours before

she walks away, reassured

Days, weeks, months, years pass

and this routine continues  Lacking

courage to face her with his feelings

he remains passive, ruminating

But then one day...
