Lovely Devil

Lovely Devil

A Poem by Wilyem Clark

O lovely devil,
I need not speak of you;
I merely think: "The time has come,"
And you appear!
Your truck with the roll-up door in back
Parks by the bus stop,
And you emerge, Mercury-like,
In cap with stylized wingèd emblem
Stitched upon it.
Fleetly you fly through my outer portal,
Your arms cradling bundles of envelopes,
(Most destined for the recycling bin),
And with clangor and clang you unlock and swing open
The tenants' array of boxes.
You feed those gaping metallic mouths
With the shreds of correspondence you carry,
A rapid unsorting of sorts;
And when that is done, then you, devil-angel,
All business and busy-ness without pause,
Hummingbird away to the neighboring garden.

Oh those wiley postmen with their tons of trash coupons and advertisements they stuff in boxes. It takes forever to root through that garbage to even find a letter. Than I'm left afterwards wondering "Why do people still send letters? Email is so much easier." Nice poem Wilyem thank you for sharing your work.

I've been writing poems since my teens (now in my 60s) and prose since the 1990s. It's been hard finding decent forums online--the free websites too often suffer sudden deaths. My "published" works ar.. more..
