The Age of Fakery

The Age of Fakery

A Poem by Wilyem Clark

Everyone is a liar,
No one is sincere.
The selfish self is all that matters.
The achievements of the past
Amount to nothing.
Industry and honesty are denigrated,
Intransigence shoulders out debate,
Imbecility trumps intelligence.
Let the air we breathe turn toxic,
Let the waters rise and drown us;
We will not take action,
Won't lift a finger to correct
Our gross and gravid errors,
Nor punish those who seek to harm us.
Caulked-up ears and sooty, slitted eyes
Protect the drowsers;
Although I shout, you do not hear,
You will not listen,
For we are ineffectuals,
Consumed by banal entertainments,
Sleepwalking through our lives like numb immortals,
Immune to beauty, rapture, and elegance,
Resting on laurels we never earned,
Animals of doubt and dopiness,
Do-nothings doomed to fail and fall.

About
I've been writing poems since my teens (now in my 60s) and prose since the 1990s. It's been hard finding decent forums online--the free websites too often suffer sudden deaths. My "published" works ar.. more..
