Inauguration Day

Inauguration Day

A Poem by Wilyem Clark

The odious date is fast upon us,
The nadir of Hope and Integrity,
The ascendancy of gross Self-interest,
Whereupon the skies will darken,
The heavens will sob incandescent tears,
For that is the biblical fate that awaits us--
Faithful, indifferent, and faithless alike.
Although I detest the human tribe
For tolerating its vilest toads,
I would never advocate
Abandonment of its prominent virtues:
Logic and earnest Empathy;
Nor would I seek to elevate
A candy-box of gilded turds
To high and mighty offices,
The surest way to guarantee
A long and cruel mass suicide.
The grazing beasts have heard the crack
Of hunters' death-delivering guns,
But they--transfixed and idly jawing--
Still stand there mute and motionless;
Such excellent targets on the plain
Encourage their own obliteration.

About
I've been writing poems since my teens (now in my 60s) and prose since the 1990s. It's been hard finding decent forums online--the free websites too often suffer sudden deaths. My "published" works ar.. more..
