Velebit

Velebit

A Poem by Wilyem Clark

Soul of my youth reincarnated
Here in Hrvatska:
Dead seas uplifted
And carved as if bears--
Gargantuan bears--
Tore at the rocks with adamantine claws.
The forests cling to what little soil
The limestone can provide.
The thumping of bootsoles atop the cobbles
Echoes the thumping of our hearts
As we belly-scratch the sky;
It purrs with the roar of a trunk-warping wind.
There are caverns skulking beneath our feet
Where water gouges, erodes, and depletes
The mountain from below, and at any moment
A sinkhole may open and swallow us up
In a mineshaft plunge toward inverted summits,
The easiest ascent of all!

About
I've been writing poems since my teens (now in my 60s) and prose since the 1990s. It's been hard finding decent forums online--the free websites too often suffer sudden deaths. My "published" works ar.. more..
