I stop there’s a rustling right behind me, it’s not a zombie they are not capable of stealth but that doesn’t mean they’re the only danger.  Humans loot others for food and other supplies, to keep, barter with enemies or bestow to friends.   Sure gives you a lot of faith in the human race. I turn around real fast and pounce where I last heard the noise, seconds before. I come in contact with a someone currently fighting like there’s no tomorrow. Dropping my pack and using dexterous movements and decoy attacks, I quickly pin my stalker to the ground.

“Why are you following me?!” I spat out at the child sized object underneath me.  An unusually curt reply, for me anyways.  Normally I’m a very personable person but I was angry.

“None of your business” they quickly fires back, with no attempt to appease me.  Adjusting my position so I can use my hands I find my bag a couple inches away and get the rope out of it.  I quickly and securely tie them up before I speak again.

In a softer tone because it’s only a kid and no longer a threat I ask “what’s your name kid”

“Not telling!”

“Not telling, now that’s an odd name.  My name is Zarah it’s nice to meat you.”  Act like you don’t care and impart a little information to ensue trust will usually ferret the answer out of them.  “Now I’ve told you my name why don’t you tell me yours.”

“Aaron.” ok so he’s a boy, I really couldn’t tell because remember it’s still pitch black.  “Why did you assault me I was minding my own business!”

“I thought you were a threat you have to be careful, sorry for attacking you and tying you up. If you promise to not run away I’ll untie you. I do that a lot, it’s kind of a quirk of mine, and it’s how you survive out in this milieu, with all the impending threats and all.  You’ll get habituated to it.”

“Yeah ok whatever; these hurt just get them off.” So I start to untie him, watching closely in case he tries to run away. When I finish I ask

“So kid how old are you, ten? Where’s your mom, your family.” I scoffed, delving deeper with my questions.

“Zombies” he spat out “I was the only one to get away and for your information I’m thirteen not ten”

“Yeah well I’m twenty-five so don’t be so rude, and I’m sorry about your family Aaron, that’s the same thing that happened to me. Except I was away when it happened, I don’t really know for sure that they are zombies but when I got back they were gone and what else could have happened.”

“They could have moved”

“Really, where and they would’ve called.  How long have you been on your own?”

“A couple hours, it just happened and I’m starting to get hungry I couldn’t get away with anything but a flashlight and it’s dying.”

“I have a whole bunch of extra batteries in my bag you can have some, I have food to. Look you’re too young to be out on your own why we don’t stick together, like form a group. I don’t really have a destination to go I’m just wondering, trying to find food.”

“Why should I trust you?  You just assaulted me and I don’t want you turning into an overbearing mom who will upbraid everything I do”

“Um… maybe cause I’m offering you food and batteries, which you don’t have at the moment.”

“Yeah so what’s in it for you?”

“Use of flash light cause I just lost mine and… a friend to you know to watch my back or talk you.”

“Why would you want a little kid like me? I’d just entail you.”

“Um I like kids they have a lot of vitality and are usually pretty pert with whimsical notions that add levity to life.  Plus I like you kid, you showed a lot of potential back there, all you need is some training and to grow into your ungainly limbs.   What do you have to lose you are a lowly mendicant, a homeless waif and probably won’t survive too long without some help.”

“Ok ill go with you I’m sure we can devise someway to live together because you’re starting to vex me.  And Zarah thanks for letting me come with you.  You won’t rue it I promise.”

“Your welcome Aaron It’s not only a favor for you.”

“So where are we going to go now.”

“I was thinking Alaska but it’s going to be a long trek and it will take a while to get there considering the fact were in New Hampshire. I have heard that the conditions are a bit better up there because it hasn’t really spread that far and not at all in places like Antarctica and Australia that are isolated by the ocean. Maybe once we get to Alaska we can try and get a lift to Russia.”

“Ok I’m cool with that but do we have the provisions to get there?”

“I have some food now but we’ll have to hunt before we set out on our crusade.  Come with me I know where we can get some weapons and other things.  They’ve put an embargo on the things coming into and out of America to prevent the spread of zombies.” I said, abruptly standing up.  “Keep up”   he ran along after me grabbing the bags.

“I hope you know where you’re going” Aaron said huffing a little.

“Yeah of course I hid some stuff out in this room a while ago we can use.”  Arriving at the door I say “ahhh here we are. A regale for the eyes”   and that it was, the outlandish, capacious room was teeming with weapons and jerky.  Backpacks, water bottles, caustic acids, anything a girl could ever want.

“Someone was here” I said

“How do you know” Aaron answered

“Well the room is slightly defaced, some of the weapons have taints of what I assume is blood and there are more weapons and other supplies”

“Is this good or bad”

“Well it could be a calamitous ruse to lure me in there, or I could be the recipient of an amazing gift either way I’m gonna take what I can.  So move your shiftless butt and help me pack these bags.”

“Ok” he yelled his eyes voracious, taking in everything

“Concentrate on food, its pivotal for our survival out there.  I’ll get weapons.”

We engrossed ourselves in collect supplies, each of us with two packs to fill.  I put my stuff in the middle and then watched him do the same.   When we were done I had gathered 2 bows with 25 arrows, 2 swords, 2 shot guns with a crapload of bullets.  Aaron had gotten jerky, canned veggies, and other things I don’t feel like listing let’s just say he negated the store room’s food supply.

“Ok Aaron time to leave now.  Follow me I know a quick way out.”  Opening the door to the entrance in the back I look around nothing there that’s good.

“This is really great” Aaron says “were go-“

“Aaron what’s wrong” I say turning around, when I see Aaron on the ground, unconscious, with a zombie holding a metal pole in his hand looming over looking hungry…
