my road

A Story by Pax
"

and I'm still have a long way to go.... hope someday i will arrive towards the destination...

"

Before I was never really into writing. I’m just a wannabe  self-taught artist and I never really thought I would considered myself one for I never showed my works to anyone. I thought it was just my hobby because I like to draw. It started as  a fascination from my cousins who really draw well on anime cartoons and robots. There I still have no skill as such but I could say I had a good sense on how to color things, how to choose this and that. So I started to collect color pens & pencils, crayons with good quality, pastels and lastly paint. I started to draw anime for I watch it a lot before, there I started to learned how to draw by the used of reference from a trading card game I bought. Then I stop as I started college, my days becomes busy. But on summer day, oh by the way I took a summer class for my minor subjects for I want to concentrate on my major subjects when the first semesters starts. One subject struck me the most, I think it was humanities 1, it’s about how humans used arts in there different sections literature arts, performing arts and visual arts (that’s how I made a poem about ‘An Artist’). The one I was so nervous about is the performing arts as I have stage fright and that’s one reason I took this subject on summer class. Summer class is just a short period so the time is much constrained. So the singing/acting and literature part was just one act and more on the visual for the final project. There my art teacher really appreciate my creativity on a certain little assignment she had given. It was to make an artwork loosely based on what you see around you, don’t used the basic ones like crayons, pencil, paint and etc. So there I was puzzled on how to achieved what I wanted to present. Many had presented a drawings on charcoal with the used of coal from a firewood. Some used colored glue and etc. And for some other classmates, now I can’t remember some(memory gap perhaps ;)..). Do you know what I presented, well I was really searching the whole house for what to used then there it is, since my mother died this kit is laying around in my father’s room somewhat hidden(sorry I can’t remember the exact details, memory gap again..lolz). Then it hit me(don’t judge me..lolz), do you know in the pages of history that make-up was been used on so many different situation on the face(if I remember the history so well). Yes, why not used make-up on paper. The problem is how would the make-up really stay on hold to my sketch pad so there it’s another puzzle to me. Then this clay is been laying around under my bed because I used to play it before now long been forgotten under my bed as I said I search the whole house for what to used. What I do is rub the clay on the paper so that the sticky residue of its content will stick to the paper. The sticky residue of the clay stays on the paper that’s why I was able to paint or should I say create a sea scape using a paint brush. I think my teacher was impress for I got an 95 for the assignment. She said I created a dreamy tone of the sunset making it glittery and shiny because of the make-up’s properties. I say when you put your mind into something you’ll create something refreshing to everyone. Then on I was chosen as the leader of the group visual project, we were given for the final project.   And now the rest is history from then on I started to used mixed media but this time I don’t used make-up anymore for really, really a hard media to used(forgot to mention that I did a lot of trial and error… almost depleted the kit for its little contents of what’s left). From then on I started to see a different light on my creative journey I don’t see it as a hobby anymore, I started to see it as learning to become an artist myself for like I said; I never did consider myself as an visual artist, just a normal human being without any talent or sort of skills at all. Now that’s a very long introduction as to say for this little article of what I intended. This is to show how I progress on my work.

First I find a reference, as you see below:

I’m such a home-body person that I find my reference at home in the internet. ;)

Then next is a sketch. You see every artwork of mine starts off with a sketch because I’m not really good in using just a paint brush maybe because it’s hard to outline a work with just a brush so I draw it first.

I do a lot of trial and error on a drawing so that’s why I’m too careful when it’s time to paint it. This is the first coat.

I used a only a few brushes, tissue, a cup with water(to wash the brush if I’m finish with one color), craft paint, sorry I forgot to take picture of the following: mixing plate, acrylic & oil colors. By the way it’s a mixed media piece, it’s not focus one media alone. The fan as you see is for the mosquitos(lolz) beneath my feet. :D ~ we have too many mosquitos back at home we must be careful. And really the fan is just in low speed for I don’t want to speed up the drying process.

As in this, I finish up the stems of the flowers and almost finished with the sky as well.

Oh I forgot the paper is A3 in size. Now this is the incomplete one, I was not really sure what I’m gonna do with the house at the background. My uncle said just cover the back-ground seems like you don’t need it. And I did cover it up.

Lastly this is the final one, finished work. Yes I admit, I didn’t totally copy the whole reference photo. For I believe that it doesn’t matter if you copy it exactly the way it is, it matters on how you did it, on how you see it in your eyes and in your mind(I’m not an expert on a photo-realistic type of art, only few can do that.). Everybody has a unique style on how to create art and this is my simple ways. I know in this I still have lots to learn for I don’t have much skills on how to shadow and still working on that perspective & depth as well. And this work takes a month to finished.

I admit that my greatest inspiration are Vincent Van Go(For I like to draw flowers for I find it the most easy to follow) and Pablo Picasso(For I like abstract so much specially on how I’m really fascinated on shapes and figures which inspires on Picasso’s cubism(and i did made a poem about it with the painting, i call it +visionary quest -)).

I really enjoyed your story and how you developed your talent and finally the finished work that comes after trial and error. You are a talented artist and one that is nature lover and creative mind. I hope you will become one of those great artists that you mentioned and blaze your own path... You will be distinct when you add your feelings along with the visual... Thank you for sharing your honesty and humbleness... :)

Thank you my friend...
Great background story. Everyone has a talent, hidden inside. In fact i am still looking for mine. So far all i have are hobbies with no talent. Like i have mentioned before i no longer hear or see the music, all i see is the dead or dying world inside and out side of me. The colors used to be bright an.d the sounds so inviting. Now they are dull and silent

This is the story of how every great artist got their start, no one is born a Monet...we strive, we falter, we get up, put our heart into it and Voilà-art is born from our soul. Beautiful painting too.

A friend once said artists walk with the Gods , I like that expression , he was speaking of visual artists but I think all creative endeavors are God like or inspired. Love this write and your creativity and talent.

This was really cool Pax, I learned a great deal. Not only about your creative process but also in relation to my own. I liked the way you wrote about that process then showed us images, as sort of a timeline. I say you are a burgeoning artist, not only because you are talented but also because you are curious, and passionate about what you love
