The clam's shell protects it...when it closes, is that selfish? What is "selfish" anyway?
Is the adult that puts the oxygen mask on first so they can function to protect the baby in their arms selfish? Sometimes, we must protect ourselves to gather strength to go on, to ground, to think and work through things. What others perceive as "selfish" changes with who the other person is.
"The key to every door is hidden
deep within the soulful depths of love
it has many layers..." - beautiful! Perhaps, the key to what is "selfish" and what is in the end thoughtful is found in love. If we never think of self, there would be nothing to offer anyone else.
These are some of the thoughts your poem stirred in me.
I just thought of an interesting quote I read long ago...I think the book was "How I Found Freedom In An Unfree World"...it went something like this...
"When people label you selfish, it is because you are not doing what they selfishly want you to do." I have always found it thought provoking. :)

yes, life is really a pretending game, maybe by our total honesty ,we also could be somehow "pretending'"? or hidden in ourselves like these so dark sea clams, maybe they hold all inside, all what we need, but we have to look and see, and find the right key...

oh your right... a very key of love were looking for...I'm so glad you enjoyed my poem my friend..
Much emotion and wisdom in your thoughtful words. I too feel... as your words so aptly describe... so much of the time, because in my opinion love doesn’t “just happen” like so many people believe. That's 'infatuation' it thus renders itself shallow, with 'scrambled lies, mixed in with bits & pieces of truth. I say love is a verb that requires action and real commitment. Too often we think of love simply as a feeling that one day came and another day floatied away. It's our deepest possible connection to another being, therefore, as human beings, we have to make a conscious selfless say in the matter.
Love is a choice. Love is one sacrifice voluntarily offered after another, for years on end. But those who are full of pride, anger & self-serving narcissism...well... those people simply cannot be expected to have any idea what 'real' love truly is. I find in today's society most people are 'love midgets' ...lacking in depth, style, substance & compatibility due to their ego's.
Thus...I remain single for I am jaded by the lack therof in today's society. Mighty fine poem

I find love and infatuatio.. read more“I say love is a verb that requires action and real commitment”
I find love and infatuation have a different perspective meanings… infatuation is a feeling that can be easily forget or erase, love is a feeling of deep connection on our soulful beings(soul-mate perhaps) like in what you said as well… though I find infatuation and love connected in some point. I think love starts with a crush, then we meet the person and share a deep bond connection over in time it will built a strong foundation of love… like you said love is a shared commitment with both party’s free will’s choice…
“pride, anger & self-serving narcissism”
Those three you mention are one of many unavoidable human nature. I guess it really depends on us, on how we trim it down or manage it not to over excess the emotions, I say balance is a perfect key for one’s emotion not to overdo things…
You’re an awesome one ms. Anne, thank you so much. You have shared much insights that I have agree upon… you time is very much appreciated.

me too Pax, I don't wanna be selfish, just can't seem to help myself. It is after all my world is it not? If we create our own existences, which I am not sure I subscribe to that theory, but if we do then doesn't a little selfishness seem logical to create the utopia one would desire to live in? I dunno, love this write though, your writes always make me think about philosophical things, that's what I love about your writes :)
oh, I've just replied that to someone when we talk about a unselfish society...

as i understand and research more about that human nature and its context in my little booklet... that can't be erase that its part of us, sometimes its how we cope up in life... that selfishness is not merely a bad nature at times... my point is that some of our negative nature is evident because it makes our lives balance....like good&bad, life&death, yin&yang.... what makes us just ..."humans".... that's why moderations come along placing itself in the center of all these things....

I think that is very profound, and I happen to agree :)
I like your poem. It's metaphorical, unique and unlike what I have read before. It gives the reader imagery that really appeals to the senses. It makes me imagine my self, knee deep in water. Sometimes burying my face in the water and prying my eyes open with sand between my fingers, looking for something desperately.
What I imagined probably was brought about by your lines:
The key to every door is hidden
deep within the soulful depths of love
it has many layers, would you find it?
:)
I, too, am selfish. INCREDIBLY SELFISH. So you're good as long as you're not as selfish as I am

You're welcome :) and correct you are. It's the degree of selfishness we have to worry about
I think I'm selfish too and sometimes it bothers me and I don't know why...
Anyway the comparison is good, naikumpara ng maayos ang inyong tula...
yung title po na Pretending Game ay nagmamatch lang sa piece... Thumbs up!

Words can open or close doors, guess we have to find out which is right, which key to use and when. To me, your poem's cathartic, self healing perhaps, shows courage to write about self within the 'slings and arrows' of living life. Maybe we all have to be a little selfish now and again, else we end up as crumbs and you know how hungry the birds can be!
