Heart of Artistry and Practicality

Heart of Artistry and Practicality

A Poem by Pax
"

A type of Journal..welcome to my life. Will you tell me your thoughts my friends. Am I too lazy to be practical...thanks everyone for giving their advice, Much appreciated

"

Why do I have to choose between

The Heart of Artistry

To

The Heart of Practicality

?

Can I just choose both ways?

Maybe I can, yet I’m just not blessed with those gifts.

Well someone said that why are you always reading? Why not make used of your learning to earn money!

Yeah, I guess I'm really not into it. or not... I'm not sure about it anymore..
My heart is always seeking for creation to do new things of artworks (that's why i missed paintings so much)... but then people around me are questioning my artistic value (maybe i really don't have it). Sometimes I think that my work is such crap that it's not worth seeing. I'm thinking that…. Why not go and do practical things… find work that earns real money every day. Yes i did that, now I'm out of my own country and work as an assistant. I just earn just enough money to send cash back to support my parent.

Now back to that someone, he said make use of your experienced then you can earn extra cash. But then my heart is not into it anymore doing web development is a pain in the head or it’s just me i guess.. Technology in the internet keeps on changing and I'm already very far behind, I stop doing it 2 years ago so it’s quite hard to start over again...

Having a heart of practicality is good maybe because they like earning money or they do it because someone is expecting from them like their family(well I guess I’m too lazy for the things I don’t have the heart to work for ~ maybe this is just my defense mechanism being lazy, though I choose practically all the time without knowing).

Having a heart of artistry is good maybe because they like what they’re doing it brings fulfillment in his/her soul or for some talented one they love it because of the high payment fee I guess( well I’m not like that, I just have the heart but not the right amount of skill for the high fee).

It’s so good to hear you’re a talented artist(Am I?), but the questions remains in my mind(Am I, really?). Well I guess I’m just a copycat artist with no real talent… Sad But I’m not sure I am!

In my opinion, Willyam, I think a fine balance of both artistry and practicality is needed in life. We NEED money to survive, this is just a fact. But, we NEED our art to thrive, this is also fact.
Here are my two cents, NEVER make a career off of what you love, once you start using it (art) for your sole source of income, it ceases to be something you do purely out of love, and becomes a job. That is not saying you can't sell your art, I am only implying that it should not be the only way you support yourself financially. Once you put a price tag on anything, it becomes work.
I always believe a profession should be something you enjoy doing and are good at...something that will make you money enough to survive....but it should never ever be what you truly love, or it will taint what you love, and art will cease to be art and become a dollar sign.
These are just my thoughts, as someone who has been in the art world.
So, are you lazy? No. You are an artist. There is nothing lazy about the painting process or the writing process or any other artistic endeavor you decide to do. Life isn't all about money. Life is about living. Keep doing what you love and that is worth its weight in gold. Be well, my friend.

Creativity versus practicality , the fine balance . Very few make a living from creativity so practicality wins often yet creativity needs headspace needs time and a job is demanding so creativity suffers . Yet when you doing something you love the mundane job of earning a living seems less stressful and practicality too can inform art and creativity make you a better writer artist . A fine balance indeed.

thanks, yes your young yet you speak wisely enough for me to learn from you.
I think you can have a heart of both. (and for the record, I've seen your paintings and they are wonderfull! Much better than my own haha:) Don't let doubts and insecurities stop you from fulfilling the pull of your heart towards art, because God gave you the love of it for a reason.
Yes maybe you need a practicle job for money, but keep you passion alive for the arts in your life. I think you're talented!
Anyways nice poem:) Very deep and truly makes the reader stop and think (along with the author's note) I quite enjoyed it. You have a very unique style that belongs to you alone! Well done!
God Bless friend:)

You wonder if you are too lazy to be practical; why not endeavor to be too practical to be lazy?
Find what you truly love to do, and then do it to the best of your ability; the money will eventually come--although you may have to work some menial jobs while waiting.
I prefer somewhat physically demanding employment because--not only does it keep you in good condition--it also frees your mind to think about more important things; keeps you from being distracted from your most precious goal.
Fairly frequent rejection will be part of your journey, know that now--and prepare.
Don't take no for an answer, Will!

thank you so much Mr. Frank.. I'll surely prepare myself.
The "practicality" you were referring to sustains life.
The "artistry" you were saying keeps us alive.
I believe there should be no choice to make, for they are both essential.
What we need is the ability on how to stay in the state of equilibrium.

Our society does not support the artist, as some countries do or have done in the past. That makes it difficult, because you have to put you attention in two places, the practical and the artistic. One of the areas will, almost certainly, suffer. And when you think how many artistic people weren't "discovered" until after they died, well, it is disheartening! Somehow, we must learn to strike a balance. Not easy and some people never can accomplish it. It's called, "being caught between a rock and a hard place", my friend.

You can choose both lovely one. You're so gifted with them, you should.
This was wonderful, I know you missed painting, you're a true talent, as your paintings are so familiar to me, as my indo-grandmother had the same style. It is astonishing how multi-talented you're. And I guess, all will come spontaneously on your way, just don't think too much, you will see ;) xx

Wow a lot of opinions on this piece and on the questions that you raised. So I guess I will add mine. For me it is always about balance. I do something that I truly love for a living--and it has worked for me for a long time. Sometimes it is just work, but mostly, I love it--and so, I am in the do what you love camp!
