Fields of the Fallen

Fields of the Fallen

A Poem by Doug Ordunio
"

commentary on war and its effects

"

Lush shady tropical village morning light

Brown boobies V formation azure sky

The area to become a battle site

Two armies, men will clash, some will die

The randomness of war will burn and rage

As frightened soldiers feign bravery to fight

Fathers, brothers, sons of tender age

Wounded, dead or maimed before the night

…And a few will remain untouched.

Mothers, sisters, wives will ask or wonder why

Beloved ones were stolen from their sight

Too soon, too soon, they will lament and cry

Where have they gone?  Where have they taken flight?

How did the spirits vanish when they fell,

Ere they were lifted heavenward like smoke?

Did any hear the tolling of the bell?
