Chapter 7

Chapter 7

A Chapter by Tay Mo :)

Alice didn’t have to turn around to know who it was. She contemplated running, kicking, screaming, anything that would let her get away. The powers from the rope she had been tied up with obviously hadn’t worn off yet, allowing her to use her powers…if they ever would wear off.

“Firs’ ya steal ma gas, then ya light one o’ my only garbage cans on fire, and then ya gots the nerve to break in and use ma phone too? Dang, and I thought only we hillbillies had guts.’’

The tow-head glared at her as he led her to the back of the store, and into a small room. The only contents were a mop and two buckets, one upon which she was directed to sit on. She tossed the boy a crude look before jerking her arm away from him and walking into the closet-like space.

“Now I ain’t sure if ya really are in trouble, but in case you ain’t clear with any other laws than the one ya said earlier, it’s a crime to attempt to light a gas station on fire, too!”

“I needed help! And besides, I didn’t light the store on fire, just the garbage can!” She cried as he flicked the light on and closed the door, locking it with a small click.

Okay, just a wee bit of trouble, but its not as bad as it could be! Definitely could be worse! I could be in that cruddy motel room with Jack and Jimmy. I could be out in the streets somewhere, stranded without food or gas. I could be…I could be…ugh forget it.

She could hear muffled voices outside the door, but could tell they were no where near the small room she was being held in. She stood up, trying to consider ways to bribe the employee to let her go. Pacing back and forth, as far as she could go anyways, Alice began to get frustrated. She kicked the bucket she had been sitting on and sent it flying into the wall, leaving a huge gash in the crumbling paint.

“Oh, shoot!” She tried to piece together what she could of the wall, but could tell it was no use. She swept the remains of the wall underneath the mop and placed the bucket in front of the hole.

She was plopped on the floor, still thinking rapidly, when the door opened. Buck-toothed boy motioned for her to stand. When she didn’t he reached down and pulled her up by her elbow, then led her out to the front of the small gas station.

He held up a hand telling her to stay where she was, and walked to another door. He grabbed a wash cloth and a mirror and pushed them into her hands. Alice stared at him for a minute before she realized what he meant. She looked at her reflection in the mirror and saw nothing but dirt. She wiped her face and set the mirror on the counter. The employee had left the room, but she could hear him moving around in the back of the store. She walked over to the window and lifted up the blinds. There was only one ancient-looking truck in the parking lot, which Alice figured belonged to the employee.

She was still staring out the window when he walked in the room again.

“So, can I ask you a question?” Alice asked.

“What?’’

“What’s your name?”

He hesitated for a minute, but then took a deep breath.

“Todd. And your name is Fyra. Or Alice. You can’t seem to make up you mind right now.” Alice blinked. Did that honestly just happen again?

“Y-yeah. That’s my name. Alice, I mean. But why are you talking…normal…now?”

“Please, I’m not a hillbilly. This just gives a good cover. Wait here.” Todd instructed.

Alice stood there, comprehending what just happened while Todd bustled around the store. She pointed to a chair when he met her eyes and he nodded once, giving her the go ahead to sit down. Alice sat and put her head on her hands, closing her eyes in the process.

“Headache?” Todd questioned.

“Can you blame me?” Alice raised her head and attempted a weak smile.

Todd stared at her for a minute, then pulled up another chair and sat down in front of her. “Man, will you stop? You’re giving me a headache.”

“Get out of my head then!” Alice snapped.
