i promise

i promise

A Poem by highonwords

i won't ever grow old,
but i'll grow to love myself,
then i'll grow to love you,
for who you are with all i am,
i hope we grow old in love,
together, forever in our eyes,
that darkness can't see,
that death can't take away,
can't come between us, alive,
but we bleed and we're tired,
of promises we won't keep,
because we're almost dead,
and the dead can only promise
so much to the living,
their last breath, maybe,
to hang the hopelessness with

Excellent poem! I love the lines "but we bleed and we're tired" - I can relate to that very much - and "the dead can only promise / so much to the living, / their last breath, maybe, / to hang the hopelessness with". Those last four lines are particularly thought-provoking. Well done!

thank you my friend :)

as they say...we have to love ourselves in order to be able to love others...

self-loathing breeds contempt for others...and even in the last breath, there is only so much we can promise, that is a truth.
