what's sadder - friends
falling in love with friends,
or lovers, falling out of love
and becoming friends,
only to fall in love again,
only to fall out of love,
again and become strangers,
only to fall in love again,
without being afraid this time,
to fall out of love, with strangers

I fell in love with a friend once, and we fell out of being friends for over 20 years -- we found each other again, fell back in love, and are now friends once more -- it's happy, for the most part, but it was hard at first for both of us to realize our lives are just too different now to sustain anything more than friends. That wasn't a critique. Good poem.

i feel sad when people fall out of love from each other, be it any kind of loving and caring relationship - it's like part of the world dies with it - a door closes - let's try to keep our windows open :) thank you, my friend, for your sharing of experience and the lovely visit :)

if we go back and talk about "consistency" there is only one constant here.. falling out of love.. but I think it is much easier to fall out of love with strangers than with a friend... it hurts too much even if you remain friends.. and a friend if he/she are true friends know all your secrets...

but your poem has made me think of this: not all friends can be your lover, but all lovers should be your friend and the better a friend I think the better a lover... anyway, here I am treading all over your poem Steph... ;0)

you are right, curt - there is nothing more i can add - it's so sad falling out with a lover, if he/she was your friend in the first place, friends and lovers becoming strangers in the end, just tragic :(
