to the woman, smoking a cigarette

to the woman, smoking a cigarette

A Poem by highonwords

the woman, smoking a cigarette,
blowing smoke in the air, in a corner,
oblivious, even meek, with her friends,
doesn't she have a lover, waiting
for her in a one-room apartment,
a crazy cat she shares her bed with,
two or three harmless pills,
with a glass of water on the nightstand,
they heard she was the other missus
of a wealthy john, how they met
in a bar out of town, said it was love
at first sight for him, gave her the key
to his penthouse, until the wife
jumped from their 20th-floor suite,
the man was inconsolable, lost his mind,
said the papers, the woman is pretty,
seems kind and innocent, just a girl,
they all sigh with serious pleasure,

just a girl

Now this write has a twist, I'd say. An innocent but bleak description but turns out to be dark by the second part.
The two words just a girl read almost kind of intriguing. Good and entertaining one.

A dark scene painted very well, Steph. There are so many different stories that are not at first obvious when we see a person. Lydi**

WOW! This is quite a vivid portrait you've painted here, under the guise of a seemingly simple observation of this girl . . . ho-hum. An excellent way to suggest that there's a dramatic story behind every single one of us. No matter how calm a person may seem on the outside (or even more so, for the calm ones!) This is really impactful & well written . . . love the specifics you add to strengthen your message.
