the air smells full of youA Poem by highonwords
You made me a bed that faces east,
'so you could see the sun ascend', you said 'and i could watch you daydream even in your dreams', you whispered between breaths that smelled of morning coffee, this is what i remember about you, the office curtains billowing in the January wind, hair gently wisping on my face, facing west to see the sun descend on the edge of a mountain, and the backdrop of the city, I would count every step, every abandoned trail, and skid-marks on the way, like the remnants of the child I become, when I am with you, I would shift my weight to my right leg, and take a careful step towards the first landing of the stairs, lean on the door to listen to the sound of embroidered silence, and glance at the flicker of the television down the door, everything is at its place. the twisted sheets on the bed, and our pillows on the floor, where the afternoon dust has settled, the unwashed windows, and the glaring fluorescent lights, I could trace your outline in the air, and faintly hope you would materialize like the tables and chairs and the bed you made one summer, the heat was unbearable, and we still allowed ourselves to be silly, we ended up kissing beyond the trees' shadows, I imagine you walking back to our place, a deadly smirk on your face, there were no stars that night, and the moon was too faraway, my heart would break in the darkness © 2015 highonwords |
