Sonnet II

Sonnet II

A Poem by Matt Shutler

The heart can tell the truth of patience past,

Untold until the beating loses will.

Our fallen love is torn away so fast.

Unknown to sense, or blood’s attempt to chill,

It stops the flow of fire with peace no more.

The chosen future saves one’s mind from doubt.

It’s cast aside with scorn and sneer before

The body can brace or change. When shade’s about

To blanket lands with frozen summer’s chill,

All sights are dark until the pain is gone.

Then night can fall by leaving earth so still.

I breathe the air that’s bound and know no dawn.

Yet time will pass with triumph, hope for men,

With living proof we aren’t to meet again.
