"The Lantern People"

"The Lantern People"

A Poem by Michael

“The Lantern People”

Tonight’s the night that they will hang their lanterns low

And pray unto a god that none of them would claim to even know.

They will sing of their songs and dance their dance,

Some will partake of the fire.

In that moment we will know of everything we so desire.

This time will be no different except that the moon won’t shine above.

She will be preoccupied with those experimenting in the ways of lust and of love.

In time the flames of the fire will strike out as many headed snakes

And in the distance you will hear of the wolf howling as its lonely heart aches.

The moon will hear this howling and she will hasten to return.

The lantern people will leave the fire blessed with lessons that they must now learn.

The many headed snakes will hiss and spit as the lantern people walk away.

Where they then go matters not, their hearts will eventually lead them all astray.

Still, tonight’s the night that they will hang their lanterns low.

Tonight the ashes of the snake-fire will bring true love crawling from below.

The moon will become a crescent and lightning will light up the night sky.

Lovers will continue experimenting but some will now begin to question why.

Tonight’s the night that you will become one of the lantern people.

You will sing songs and you will dance, you will copulate in the glare of the church steeple.

On this night you will partake.  You will step into the fire

As you listen to a wolf howling eventually to retire.

Now the moon, she will be full again in the nighttime sky.

True love, she will return below the ashes, all good serpents must die.

In the blackness lanterns will hang, they will continue hanging, hanging low.

Bequeathed now with a lantern tonight’s the night that you will finally go…..
