A GiftA Story by Kat
She held her heart in her hands. Looking at it, she was ashamed. It was rough and beaten, scuffed around the edges it did not make for the prettiest sight. But it was all she had. Peeking out from underneath her lashes, she dared a glance at the boy in front of her. He was watching her, and she looked away. She heard him take a step closer but she continued to stare determinedly at his boots.
Squeezing her eyes tightly shut, she wondered if she could do it again. Could she take one more chance, risking another blow to her heart. At this point she knew she was as fragile as glass and if this went wrong, she would undoubtedly shatter. She took a deep breath and could feel her lungs shudder. Opening her eyes, she looked up at him again, holding his gaze. His eyes flicker from blue to green to brown. Settling in a dark, rich color the shade of coffee beans. These eyes search her face, looking for something that she doesn't know and is terrified to find out. Chestnut strands of hair stand all over his head, falling on his face and over his ears. He is beautiful and so is his heart. Quickly, before she could change her mind, she pushed her hands out and offered them to him. Slowly, ever so carefully, his gaze moved from her face to her hands. Terrified, her poor heart shuddered a little bit and continued to shake as he lifted it up. She watched as he focused on it. Gently, he ran a thumb over of of the jagged black spikes protruding from her and gradually they seemed to ease back. Breathless, she watched as he bypassed her defenses revealing her brokenness the further he went. He found the key hole and stopped, glancing up at her. She looked away, focusing on his shoes again in shame. She didn't have the key. She'd thrown it away the last time. This had been a stupid idea, she thought. For a moment she had forgotten how broken she truly was. Suddenly, a thrum went through her whole being forcing her to look at him again, in shock. He was opening it. Somehow, someway he had made a key and gotten through. A soft glow emanated from within the shell of her heart, stirring her curiosity. It had been so long since she had seen it last. She had built up her walls each time to have them shattered and regrown. No one had made it to her heart of hearts. She hadn't let them. But this boy had changed everything. This boy had taken her barriers and pushed them carefully to the side. As he picked up her inner heart, she knew that this was going to be it. This was her last chance and she prayed she had gotten it right. The glow was blue, different from the soft pink she remembered it being. She remembered that particular shade of rose. It was warm and bright like the petals of a flower. Now she was a azure. Rich and sad and deep like the ocean. She watched as he held her inner heart in his hand and held her breath. His eyes flickered closed as a different light started in his chest. This light was a brilliant golden yellow. It shone from his chest like a beacon but by his next breath it was gone. Instead, lying in his palm was a single orb of light. Half shone blue while the other shone gold. Her eyes widened and she took her next breath in, filling her chest with crisp, new air. It had worked. They fit.
