My Ballad of Beer

My Ballad of Beer

A Poem by Wesley D. Stein
"

I feel this poem succinctly explains who I am, in just a few lines.

"

I want to be smart, not vendictive.

Funny, not a clown.

Attractive, not vain.

Happy, not dillusional.

I want to shout, but go unoticed.

To be athletic, but with more narrow shoulders,

artsy, but with broader shoulders.

To love and be loved.

I want a voice, to sing and to speak.

A family, one I've bled for.

A church, but not on their terms.

A better childhood.

A better, not bigger, slice of the pie.

I want bread with applebutter.

Peaches, with no skin.

Popcorn with no corn and sodas with no pop.

I want a glass of beer, a tall glass of dark, dark beer.

I love this! It's very clever, and I remember writing poems just like this one!
(I love the line about soda and popcorn because you talked about popcorn, and then soda with no pop! Keep using the wordplay!)

This is really creative. I like the way you describe what you want to have or be without actually saying it. You use very good descriptions and I love how everything blends together. I enjoyed this poem. Nicely done!

this very accurately describes the thought process of the inebriated; the first drink removes insecurities and doubts, moving on to that drunken ambition where you can accomplish anything, followed up with unconditional love and lament, and capped off, of course, with the munchies. that might just be me, though.

this is a perfect example of less is more. it says so much in such a small space, and it definitely provides a lot of space to understand the author on a deeper level, even having never formally met.

cheers.
