Being A Child Who Was Born In The Sunbelt

Being A Child Who Was Born In The Sunbelt

A Poem by Wesley Dingler

Being a child who was born in the sunbelt
I have never cared for the winter months
But now I am empowered by something I have never felt
And it comes as much more than a hunch

When the wind picks up the ways it does
Every year this time of the year
I don't feel confined by all that once was
When I would look to the cold and only know fear

I know coldness is coming in precise time
But unlike the way it worried before
I look the changing seasons dead in the eye
And know it has nothing to threaten me with anymore

Sometimes I will hear it whisper
Other times I will hear it speaking in tongues
But I no longer find myself hindered
Like all of the other sons of lesser sons

Cold will come and cold will pass
And if Heaven finds me worthy enough
Then darkness too will break at last
And all that will remain is warmth and love

This is a lovely representation of adaptation and acceptance. When I was a kid I loved the summer. Now I can't wait for the burning sun to cool into Autumn. Happy first day of Autumn, incidentally. The winter cold may make my bones ache but I'll look forward to Spring. We must endure one season to reach another here in my state but sometimes one week may have a touch of them all. Great write.
