What Would You Say? (2014)

A Poem by Wesley Dingler

   I.

We both know this much,

   As well as any two:

You're always nice to me,

But I'm all wrong for you.

   II.

I know, as well as any,

I've too much of my father in me

For most to even bother with me--

   I'm fortunate there are any.

   INTERLUDE

What would you say,

If I proposed we ride around together anyway?

We could ride all night--till the break of day--

With every radio song making me feel more like I belong.

We could ride so far from this place.

   So, what would you say?...

   III.

We've both worked so hard

   Just to get what little we have;

And so now, here we are,

At the road where futures cross paths.

   IV.

So, I've got a fast car,

And you've got a decision to make:

Either we can leave tonight,

Or we can live and die this way--

   V.

And wouldn't that be a shame?...

Wesley Dingler
The fourth stanza is derived from the Tracy Chapman song "Fast Car." If you haven't heard it, look her up. She is an amazing poetess.

You tell me.
