The First Rain

It is said that one of the most relaxing sounds is running water; this is undoubtedly true in Ticuman, Morelos, Mexico. When the first drops of rain sink into the parched soil you can almost hear a sigh from the shriveled grass. Plants that have been in a six-month drought soak up the life giving fluid. Standing on our porch, we watch the dark, heavy clouds billowing towards us. The rain falls, and the sprinkle soon grows to a downpour; large drops splash over the dry leaves. Lightning flashes across the sky, and thunder announces the arrival of the rainy season. When morning arrives, the sun shines on a transformed valley, reflecting off droplets still clinging to the grass. A cool breeze blows the lingering mist off the now-green mountainsides. Trees burst into life, and vines begin to reach towards the heavens. Finally, after six hot, dry months, the drought is over.
