Tell Me Something I Don't Know

Tell Me Something I Don't Know

A Poem by Well Blow Me Down!
"

Internet crushes and friendship and a nonbinary person's search for advice on how to handle it all. Happy endings are my favourite!

"
INTRODUCTION: SELF
I keep this private blog to write my secret, inner thoughts in.
An endless, sappy saga, till my angsty mind just rots. In-
Stead of stressing net friends, I vent here in a rush
To you alone, my confidante, I’ll talk about my crush.
I met ‘em in a forum where they had smart things to say
When I responded, it was clear we’re both into wordplay
We emailed, and we chatted, and our friendship became strong
And I wish that I could kiss ‘em"But I can’t tell ‘em"-
at most,
I’d dare, perhaps, to hint at it"I can’t risk losing him
I’d lose my chance If they don’t like me that way"No,
I can’t indulge that whim.
And I’ll ask the ones I trust what they would do if they were me
And I hope they’ll have some insights that I’d miss..so let me see…

Verse 1: Father
Well, son, you’re wise to come to me, I know a thing or two
About the ways the weird world works. Above all, this is true:
Do not go trusting strangers on the Internet, my son
They’re out to get your credit cards, and of money, you’ll have none!
I’ve heard tell of these stories, and they seldom ever last.
It’s just a phase you’re going through, you’ll be glad when it’s passed.
So put your faith in family and real friends"stay safe.
I know it might be hard for you, my boy, but just be brave!

Chorus 1 (Self)
Why don’t you tell me something I don’t know?
If you just want to wear me out with platitudes, just go.
You think you’re full of wisdom? Well, then, Mister, it don’t show.
Why don’t you tell me somethin’ that I don’t already know?

Verse 2: Friend
I’m glad you came to talk to me; I’ve been in love before.
You’re lucky it’s a friend you trust, and not some two-bit horticulturalist.
And if your friendship’s solid, well then, buck up, buddy boy…
Friends always forgive you"there’s no risk, so grab that joy!
And if they just don’t like it, kid, they don’t deserve your love.
You’ve still got friends you’ve really met, so just give them the shove.
I can’t believe that there could be a genuine rapport, so
If they’re willing, have some fun in chat"that’s what they’re for!

Chorus 2 (Self):
Why don’t you tell me somethin’ I don’t know?
I’ve got my share of common sense, as evidence will show.
And smartypants, I’d take a chance, but I’d better take it slow.
Man, why don’t you tell me somethin’ I don’t already know?

Verse 3: Self to Crush
I just dropped in chat to tell you hi"do you have time?
I kind of want to talk with you ‘bout somethin’ on my mind.
I’d hate to lose the chance of tellin’ you just how"
But if you’re busy, it can wait"or great, let’s do it now.
Well, you should know I’m glad we met; I’m always glad to talk
I love to see our friendship grow"wish we could take a walk
I love how we’ve been sharin’ thoughts"I love our fun pet names.
You’re funny, cute, and serious; I trust you, I hope you feel the same.

Chorus 3: Crush to Self
Why don’t you tell me somethin’ I don’t know?
My readin’s fine between the lines; I’ve felt emotions grow
You’re at the brink of speakin’ out. Stop freakin’ out, and oh,
Just hurry up and tell me somethin’; I already know!

Final Chorus and Coda:
SELF: I’ve fallen for you, darlin’, now you know
CRUSH: I’m proud of you for tellin’ me.
SELF:         Just tell me: is it okay, or…?
CRUSH: It’s movin’ and unusual; it’s mutual…
SELF: It’s mutual! I love you!
CRUSH: I love you too!
TOGETHER: It takes a leap of faith to tell you somethin’ you don’t know.
CRUSH: I know.
