Freshman Year 1: Raw Gums

A college student finds herself constantly being thrown back in time. She tries to use this power to help others. However with no control over when it'll happen, that's almost impossible.

EXT. DREAM

AYITA SMITH runs. The light almost blinds her. The only darkness in this space comes from the shadows of giant orbs. They move and bounce and crash. Ayita is lucky enough to not touch anyone of them.

A woman wearing headphones and a long flowing dress, BRIO, watches her. Ayita stops and watches her. Brio nods along to her music, and holds up three fingers.

AYITA

No I don't want three. I want more. I want five. Please. Please

AYITA'S DORMROOM - MORNING

Ayita wakes up to find herself lying spread out on the floor. A dream catcher hangs on the side of the bed.

AYITA

Yeah you sure work.

Ayita sits up and stretches. She checks her phone. It reads 8:27am. One text from JOHN.

INT. DINNER KITCHEN

-EGGS SIZZLE- JOHN HAWKINS, an 18 year old working at a diner; cooks up some egg whites. Ayita walks into the kitchen.

AYITA

Still can't make hollandaise sauce?

Oh shut it Ayita. You get free breakfast out of it.

AYITA

JOHN

John puts on a hoodie over his uniform. He sits across from Ayita drinking a cup of coffee. Ayita's got her egg whites and avocado.

FIORA, a well-dressed British gentlemen, throws his glass at the T.V.

He takes out a couple of hundreds and leaves it on the counter. Fiora leaves as PAIGE ACKERLEY enters. Fiora knocks Paige down spilling papers everywhere. Paige picks up her paper quickly.

JOHN

AYITA

Oh nothing bad ever happens to me. That hair though, different story.

Paige’s hair is a bright lime green with little bits of brown showing through.

Paige takes a seat.

She's been showing up a lot recently. Just her and some books. The hair's new though

A loud car drives through a puddle. Splashing a woman in the face. Ayita checks the time.

Ayita makes it to class just in time. She takes a seat. The teacher, MRS. BOLE starts doing her thing. Talking about Schrodinger's cat.

Lexi and Ayita make it outside the building. A crowd as gathered around the building. They just stand there away from the front of the building, staring at the roof. As Ayita and Lexi join the crowd they see why.

Paige stands on the top the roof. It looks like she’s about to jump. Some papers in one hand and a knife in the other. Lexi pulls out her phone. 1:03pm

Paige falls. Ayita covers her eyes with her arm. She can't look.

AYITA'S DORMROOM - MORNING

Ayita stand in the middle of the room. Her pose is exactly the same. Ayita's phone vibrates. She moves her arm slow, confused. She's in her room, but how. The dream catcher sways back and forth.

She checks her phone. 8:27am

Ayita sits at the booth opposite of the John. Just like before. She eats her egg whites, no avocado this time.

Just then Fiora breaks the TV

He takes out his wallet, leaves some money, and leaves the restaurant knocking down Paige. John looks back at Ayita.

Ayita gets up.

JOHN

If somehow for some reason I know what's going to happen next. I have to at least try to talk her out of it

John gets up too. A loud car drives by

Ayita and John walk over to Paige. She picks up a page on the floor that Paige missed. Ayita hands the paper to Paige. She seems very distracted work.

She takes the paper and doesn't give Ayita another thought.

Ayita and John sit across from Paige.

John holds out his hand and smiles

John sits at the booth. Drinking coffee. One broken TV hanging over the bar. One troubled green haired girl sitting in her spot. Ayita walks over to John.

Ayita takes John's coffee

Ayita runs for the sword. One finger touches it as white flash consumes her.

Ayita waits in her car. Sword in the back.

Fiora leaves the restaurant pissed and heads for his car. He doesn't get into the car. Just puts his hands on the side of it.

Ayita walks up to him nervously. The sword behind her back. Fiora notices.

Fiora parks the car and heads towards the backseat. Ayita gets out. Fiora takes out the two swords

He puts the sword back and grabs a dagger instead. He tucks it in his belt and hides it with his suit.

Fiora and Ayita walk down the hall. It's full of students.

AYITA

How are you supposed to find anything?

FIORA

The necromancer either isn't here at all or doesn't want to be seen

COLLEGE STAIRS

Ayita opens the door.

Fiora walks down the stairs, followed by Ayita.

BASEMENT

Thankfully a light switch is on the wall the door. The basement is pitch black. Fiora hits the lights and they click on, flickering. The rats scurry away.

FIORA

Are you coming?

AYITA

Yeah just give me a minute.

FIORA

Just stay behind me

Fiora pulls out his dagger.

FIORA

The boiler bangs on. Ayita look tense while Fiora is more ready for anything.

FIORA

In this fuss I almost forgot to ask your name

A bat rushes past. Ayita freaks out.

Fiora looks behind him. They're past a fork in the road. More importantly Ayita isn't there.

FIORA

He walks to the fork.

FIORA

Well that’s not a good sign

The faintest footsteps sneak up behind him. Fiora turns around quickly and stabs the owner of the footsteps. A zombie, missing an arm and a jaw doesn't seem all that bothered. A bunch of zombies just wonder around, not caring at all.

FIORA

Why aren't you doing anything? Let me speak with your master

No response

FIORA

Let me speak with him NOW

The zombie’s eyes turn a bright blue. It begins crying like a baby.

FIORA

Crying, that's a bit childish don't you think

Fiora's knocked out by another zombie behind him.

BASEMENT LATER

Ayita and Fiora are tied up to a pipe running across the floor. Ayita managed to get her phone out. 1:00pm.

AYITA

Fiora wakes up to see Ayita in chains. He tries to get up. But can't.

FIORA

Just tied up. You'd expect something more.

AYITA

Zombies are one of the very few monsters Hollywood almost got right.

AYITA

A flash of white light and Ayita's gone.

AYITA'S DORMROOM - MORNING

Ayita sits on the floor. Still tied up.

AYITA

Ayita's phone goes off. She gets up and falls flat on her face. She inches her way back up again. She looks at her phone and sighs. Ayita tries to unlock it with her chin. She gets it, texting on the other hand, not so much. She calls John. Putting him on speaker.

JOHN

(o.v)

Oh hey Ayita. Free egg white at the diner if you want them?

AYITA

Um John can you come other. I'm kind of tied up.

JOHN

(o.v)

Yeah I get it. College can get pretty crazy

AYITA

JOHN

(o.v)

AYITA

JOHN

John knocks on the door.

AYITA

Come in

He opens the door.

JOHN

Oh wow you won’t kidding

AYITA

Tell me you brought a saw or something

JOHN

Just my hands. Give me a minute I'll figure it out

JOHN

Yeah you do

John gets started untying Ayita.

JOHN

It looks like some kindergartner tied this.

He pulls one last string and the whole thing falls apart. Ayita hugs him.

JOHN

So what do you say? Free breakfast

AYITA

JOHN

This is different? Are you sure you're okay?

AYITA

I don't know. I just want to try another angle. Like go see what Lexi's up too

JOHN

Yeah sure. I haven't seen her in a bit. I'll make pancakes or something.

Ayita gets up. John follows.

EXT. LEXI'S HOUSE

Her place is huge. Like way more than a normal college student could ever need or afford. John knocks on the door. Lexi opens it. Smoke leaves the house.

LEXI

Ayita, John hiya.

(Smoke detector sounds)

INSIDE LEXI'S HOUSE

John's in the kitchen. Burnt bacon smoking on the countertop. He calls into the living room where Ayita and Lexi are sitting. They talk while Lexi holds her baby.

JOHN

Where's the bisquick?

LEXI

Aw I thought you'd do them from scratch

JOHN

JOHN

LEXI

(To Ayita)

I know right. Like just look at his little checks. He like never cry's either it's amazing.

AYITA

(Pause)

Ayita takes the baby

They're gotta be more than one baby with blue eyes around here right

They look fine stop worrying. I'm not doctor though

The baby starts crying.

AYITA

(Panicked)

Lexi takes the crying baby back.

He might actually be hungry. I'll be right back

COLLEGE

The baby's cry echoes to the college. No one seems bothered by it. It travels to the basement, looks like someone’s hiding a few dead bodies. The cry echo's and they begin to move. Sort of wonder around with no clear motive.

INT. LEXI'S HOUSE - TABLE

Lexi, John, and Ayita sit around the table eating breakfast. Laughing; having a good time.

LEXI

(Grown)

Aw class soon

AYITA

You just wanna skip today

LEXI

AYITA

Just hang out you know

JOHN

Really?

AYITA

LEXI

JOHN

Did something happen last night. I find you tied up in your room, now you don't wanna go to class. Is someone after you?

LEXI

Tied up?! Honey I've got a phone

AYITA

John and Lexi look a little skeptically.

AYITA

Okay fine I'll be honest. I'm avoiding a guy. Last night got a little awkward

LEXI

Zombies burst through the door.

The move towards the baby.

AYITA

(To zombie)

You know it barely even looks real

Lexi gets closer to them.

LEXI

You need to leave

The front leading zombie takes the baby

LEXI

What the hell is your problem?

ZOMBIE

One of them bites Lexi in the neck. She barely has time to fall down before she's back up again. She strokes that baby’s hair softly. Neck bleeding.

AYITA

JOHN

Okay

She grabs Johns and they run off. A flash of white. 1:03

INT. AYITA DORMROOM

Ayita falls to the floor. Same time, same place.

AYITA

It's the baby. Lexi's kid is the necromancer.

Ayita runs away. Not even bringing her phone.

DINAR

Ayita slams her hand on the counter. Coughing everyone’s attention. Includes Fiora. She stares him down.

FIORA

Can I help you?

AYITA

Thellis

FIORA

Wait how do you?

AYITA

Talk to me outside.

FIORA

They leave the dinar. No time to loss. 9:00

PARKING LOT

Fiora leans back on his car.

FIORA

The necromancers a child

AYITA

FIORA

This, this makes it complicated.

John runs out of the dinar.

JOHN

John holds up a takeout bag.

JOHN

Fiora glares at him.

AYITA

I think Lexi's in trouble.

JOHN

FIORA

Her babies a necromancer

John laughs

JOHN

Ayita I didn't know you did the whole roleplay thing

Ayita gives him a look. John's laughing stops.

AYITA

Just trust me

JOHN

Okay. I’ll call Lexi if you're that scared.

John takes out his phone. It rings, no answer

JOHN

She's probably just getting ready for school.

Fiora stands straight.

FIORA

EXT. LEXI'S HOUSE

Lexi's door is busted open. Ayita stares at the house while Fiora drives down the road.

AYITA

No. There early. Why are they early?

Ayita opens the door of the still moving car. She runs into the house.

JOHN

Ayita?!

(To Fiora)

What's going on?

FIORA

Necromancers

Fiora parks in front of the house.

FIORA

Now I you'd please get out of the car. You're sitting on my swords.

INT. LEXI'S HOUSE

A group of zombies crowd around the crib. Among them, Lexi.

AYITA

Oh god

The hoard take notice of her. The baby starts crying. They slowly encroach.

An arrow flies over one the zombie’s heads.

FIORA

(o.s)

You missed!

JOHN

(o.s)

I know I missed!

Fiora runs in with a sword. One by one slicing off zombie heads.

FIORA

Get the child out of here.

Ayita's frozen, staring at the clock. 1:02

FIORA

Ayita right? I need you calm down. Just trust me alright.

(Pause)

Take the child and leave.

Ayita makes a B line for the cradle. Fiora has drown most of the zombies off of it by now. She grabs the baby, it still crying. She runs outside, being followed by a few zombies. John tries to hit them with a crossbow, but it doesn't really work out.

It's 1:03pm. A bright light ripples like still water sent in motion. Stopping right at Lexi's door. The babies gone. The dead stop moving.

JOHN

What just happened?

AYITA

It wouldn't have reached

Fiora walks to the door, tiered.

FIORA

Good thing you brought the child outside. That martyr isn't the best at picking their spots.

AYITA

Don't please. I need to remember all of this when I go back again. No one dies.

Ayita enters the house.

INT. LEXI'S HOUSE

The world tints white. Lexi sits at her table. Writing something.

AYITA

Lexi?

LEXI

(Smile)

Hey ya girl

AYITA

You're alive?

LEXI

Nope.

(Pause)

You're way smarter. Is writing you will after you're dead illegal?

AYITA

I'm pretty sure no one would know.

LEXI

Good. It's a nice house Ayita, You and John should have it.

AYITA

I couldn't really

LEXI

If you don't take the place I'm just gonna haunt it.

Ayita giggles a little.

LEXI

(Smile)

Besides what are friends for

Lexi hugs her

LEXI

I'll see you later, much later hopefully

AYITA

I can fix this. You won’t be dead for long.

LEXI

I asked her for you. You only get three people Ayita. You're done rewinding.

AYITA

Lexi's gone. In her place is Brio.

AYITA

She puts her finger to Ayita's mouth. Then pats her head. Like she'd proud of her little puppy. The world returns to normal, no tint, no Brio. The only difference, the paper on the table. LEXIS WILL.

John walks in.

JOHN

Where'd you get those?

Ayita looks down. She holds a glass of milk and a cookie.

AYITA

I'm not too sure. I can't go back again.

JOHN

I'm still not a hundred percent sure what's going on. But hey, no zombie apocalypse right?

AYITA

Yeah,

She eats the cookie. The clock rings. 1:04pm

FIORA

Someone has to fix that clock.

AYITA

I like it that way.
