“What do you mean you don’t know?!” Styx the demonic lion shouted out at his male lover, Dray. Dray was a pure demon sent to earth to roam the earth and wreak havoc. Dray had been the one to make Styx realize his bisexuality. Until now, everything had been perfect.

“I’m saying I don’t know who I want to be with.” Dray answered. Dray always had a problem with making commitments and the relationship he and Styx had together wasn’t an exception. Dray looked like he was ready to explode. “Please, just meet the others at the crater by midnight tomorrow night; I want to think about my final decision.” He explained quietly.

Snorting in disgust, Styx tightened his muscles and sprang off the rugged cliff and ran down the mountain at high speed. He fought to control the tears welling up in his eyes. As they began to form on his eye lids, the wind would blow them away and make his eyes sting. He loved Dray with all his heart, but it agitated him how Dray had multiple partners. Dray was bisexual too, and from what Styx knew the rest of the partners were all females. Styx always liked to fantasize that he was the only one Dray was with and had ever loved. Dray had given him a piece of his “heart”. Though it wasn’t really a heart, demons didn’t have hearts. Dray claimed he had been able to control the unseen particles of matter and manipulate them using black magic to compose a small dusky purple colored structure he called his “heart”.  He then broke it into pieces and had given a shard to each of the other ones he loved. Styx wore his shard around his neck as a symbol of his affection for Dray.

As soon as Styx had reached his cave he’d kept after joining Muertrier pride, he laid down sobbing at the fact that he might lose his love. Touching the shard around his neck gently with a forepaw, he felt the cold smoothness against his toes. He only began to sob more, and he curled into a tight ball and slowly managed to drift off to sleep.

The next morning, Styx was awoken by a fellow assassin of Muertrier named Creed. He’d arrived at Styx’s den to announce another raid on the Blitzkrieg pride. “Get up, rise and shine beautiful.” Creed said with a sarcastic tone. Creed had always been a bit of a bully to Styx ever since Styx joined Muertrier. Creed was bossy and was always calling Styx names and was never sincere about any compliments he’d give. After some time, Styx had grown on Creed because they shared the same dark sense of humor. Creed only teased him now.

After last night, Styx was in no mood to put up with Creed’s playful antics. “Leave me alone…” Styx growled at Creed. “What’s up with you?” Creed growled back, shoving Styx roughly. “C’mon, we have to go.” Styx sprang to life. “I said, LEAVE ME ALONE!” He roared as he sprang on top of Creed, pinning him down to the smooth cave floor. As Styx prepared to give a warning bite to Creed’s exposed throat, Creed raked Styx’s underbelly and managed to get away. “Man, what is WRONG with you!?” Creed shouted as he dashed out of the cave.

Styx stared blankly at the floor where Creed had been pinned only moments ago. Styx felt hopeless and that familiar tingling sensation in his eyes started again. He began to weep once again. Styx shook his head as he tried to contain himself. He ran out of the cave and was surprised by the strength of the sunlight. He’d slept half the day away. Deciding he needed time to clear his head, Styx chose to take the long route through the rocky mountains of Muertrier territory to get to the crater. He’d arrive there by sun down.

By sunset, Styx was close to the large grassy field where the crater was located. He’d managed to compose himself and had decided that if it was meant to be, Dray would choose him. Now at the top of the last mountain, Styx had a full view of the field below. He could see the darker ashy gray spot in the center of the field. It was the crater. Gracefully hoping from rock to rock, he made his way down the mountain swiftly. As his paws touched the grass for the first time, he lifted his feet up high when he stepped. The grass tickled. As he approached the crater Styx saw two figures already waiting there. Drawing closer he could make out the characteristics; one was a wolf and the other was a demonic lion, like himself. The wolf was an amber brown color and was an impressive size for her species. The demonic lion was dark gray with tan under fur. Catching her scent, Styx gasped. “Telly?” Telly turned to look at him. “Styx!” She exclaimed. “You’re with Dray too…” She said, in a much more somber tone. Telly was also a member of Muertrier so it was a surprising encounter for the both of them.  The wolf that had been sitting quietly finally spoke up. “I’m Sariah.” She said. Styx and Telly both nodded their heads in acknowledgement. Together, the three sat alone in the formation of a triangle awaiting Dray’s arrival at midnight.

Only a few minutes of silence had passed before the three heard a screech not too far off in the distance. “Dray, where ARE you!?” sounded a young voice. Moments later a smaller black and red winged creature appeared at the base of the crater. “What are you guys doing here and where is my Dray?” She demanded as her strangely blue eyes shone in the moonlight. She seemed a lot younger than everyone else and Styx concluded she was an adolescent vampire from her scent. “It’ll be a while.” Telly said with an annoyed tone. Styx knew Telly didn’t have much patience with obnoxious teenagers. “What’s your name?” The young female asked Telly. “I’m Telly” She replied bluntly “and that’s Styx and Sariah.” Telly said as she motioned to them with her tail. “Oh cool! Well I’m Blue!” Blue said enthusiastically. “I’m a vampire.” She added as she flashed her fangs. “Good.” Telly replied sharply. “Now please sit down and shut up as we await Dray’s arrival.”

When midnight came, everyone began to look around anxiously. Apprehension was gnawing at Styx’s belly. Bright purple auras began glowing in the sky above them and almost instantly spawned Dray, in the middle of the crater.  Blue was the first to break the silence. “Dray! I missed you!” She called. “Yes, and I have missed you too. All of you.” He responded sadly. “However, today is the day I must choose who I’d like to spend the rest of my life with.” He added tiredly. Styx wondered if Dray had been up all night the previous night thinking about who he’d choose. Dray began to tremble and Styx grew restless. He hated seeing Dray so stressed.

After a few moments Dray looked up to meet Blue’s eyes. “I’m sorry.” He said softly. Blue looked confused. “What?” She gasped. Dray looked down again. “I’m sorry Blue, I love you but you just don’t give me what I need.” Blue sat motionless staring at Dray with her deep blue eyes. Tears began to fall from them, and she sprang up and began to run. She flapped her wings and became airborne. Flying away, her sobs could still be heard in the night as she drifted away with the wind. Dray stared at his feet quietly. Telly interrupted him. “I have no need for you to pain yourself even more I already know it’s not me.” She said sadly, and she turned around and dashed off quickly back towards the mountains.

“Telly…” Dray sighed to himself. Dray looked up at the moon above. His eyes shone against the light and Styx could tell he was on the verge of crying. Styx prepared to say something reassuring, but Sariah beat him to it. “Dray my love, please don’t cry.” Sariah cooed as she crept up to him and nuzzled his chest then turned to glare at Styx. Anger flowed through Styx’s body at the sight of this but he kept himself under control for the sake of Dray. Dray sat still as a statue. Sariah nuzzled him again. “Dray, are you ok?” She asked with a worried tone. Dray looked up with a glazed look in his eyes but still didn’t respond. Nothing seemed to break the gaze he held.

“Sariah, get back.” Styx growled warningly, “Something isn’t right.” Sariah turned to look Dray in the face. “What do you mean…?” She asked. Licking his nose she continued “Dray, please talk to me.”  Dray growled viciously from deep inside his throat. Sariah took a few steps back in astonishment. “Dray…” She gasped. Hissing angrily, Dray got up and wandered a few feet away and crouched down. Shrieking demonically, large bony wings sprouted from his back and began to grow. Claws the length of knives formed on his paws. His eyes turned red. Styx watched the transformation knowingly as Sariah stood there, mouth agape with astonishment. Dray was entering demon form. It happened whenever a demon was experiencing severe stress or mood changes. Demons in their demonic forms were quite unpredictable and would kill anyone in this state.

“Dray my love…what is happening, what are you doing?” Sariah pressed on stupidly. She was a mortal, she had no idea what was going on. She was still walking towards him, Styx roared at her. “Sariah, he’ll kill you! He’s in demon form, get away!”  Dray’s demon turned to look at her. Screeching, it used its magnificent wings to lift itself high into the air. Plummeting down back to the ground, it seized Sariah’s small body in its dagger-like claws. She howled as the claws went through her stomach. Dray’s demon soared high into the air. It bent down and took Sariah’s head in its jaws. As she screamed pitifully, it bit down into her skull crushing her head and instantly killing her. Its fangs easily decapitated the now dead Sariah, and her body plummeted down to the field below. Dray’s demon consumed her head and then floated back down to the ground silently. It seemed almost peaceful now that it had made a meal of Sariah’s head. Collapsing in the grass, Dray’s demon began to fade away quickly. Styx approached Dray cautiously. He could see that Dray was still breathing. He sat and waited for Dray to regain consciousness.

An hour later, Dray’s eyes blinked open. He stood up and looked around in confusion. He saw Styx and smiled weakly. “Hey…Where’s Sariah?” He asked. Styx frowned and nodded towards the grass nearby where her headless body lay motionless. Dray gasped loudly and stared in astonishment. “You went demon and killed her…” Styx explained. Dray looked down sorrowfully at his paws. Styx walked over and licked him on the head to reassure him. Dray looked up to meet Styx’s gaze silently. Styx grinned lovingly at him and Dray smiled back. Styx felt relief and happiness flow through his body at the realization that he was the one. Dray didn’t have to say a word. Styx knew instantaneously from his eyes that Dray had chosen him all along.
