I Was Finally Home

I Was Finally Home

A Story by Morgan Renae

I hated driving the long deserted streets on my way home. Houses passing in unnoticeable blurs. A yellow hazy light illuminated the road in spaced out circles. My brain zoned into somewhere else; barely acknowledging my actions as I continued my drive. Not soon enough did I turn into the all familiar driveway. Grass lined on one side, tall vinyl fence on the other. I parked in my spot, behind her red little car.

Quickly, before stepping out, I slipped on my jacket. The nights had been brutal lately; in preparation for winter. The cold air silently filled the car as I stepped out onto the cement. I fumbled with my keys; looking for the one to unlock the deadbolt. I smiled to myself; she left the light on for me. It was the small stuff like that that she did that made me smile from ear to ear.

I tried unlocking the door as silently as possible. Knowing that by this hour she was long asleep. Stepping in to the dark kitchen I fumbled for the light switch. Placed my keys on the table and began to take off my jacket. It still felt cold in here. I sat down, quietly slipping off my boots, before noticing a bright lime green sticky note on the front of the fridge.

Dinner is in the white bowl on the second shelf. Homemade clam chowder! -  <3

P.S. There are rolls on the counter!

Of course she knew I’d be hungry! I chuckled to myself a little before turning towards the hall. I stepped into the bathroom already half clothed. Aching to feel the heat of the shower and wash the grime of the day off, only to stop just before getting in to see a neatly folded pile of pj’s and a freshly washed towel waiting for me in there.

Just one peak, and then I’ll go heat up dinner.  I cracked open the bedroom door; a sliver of light shining through. Landing almost perfectly across the bed. From here I could see her, tossed haphazardly amongst the blankets. Clutching to a pillow, her dark auburn hair tangled around her face. One leg out of the covers, bare to the thigh. Once again I smiled ear to ear, content with just watching her sleep; her chest raising and falling in a gentle rhythm.

I turned to the kitchen; flicking off the light and walking back to the bedroom. Clam chowder is just as good for breakfast. I shut the bedroom door gently behind me. Carefully walking around to my side and slowly slipping in the bed. I slid up close behind her. Gently admiring her peaceful state as I brushed a few strands of hair away from her face. I laid down next to her, my arm draping comfortably over her waist. Pulling her ever so slightly into my chest; feeling her fragile frame against mine. I nestled my face into the pillow, smelling the soft subtle scent of her shampoo. She stirred gently, noticing my presence. Hi sweety, she mumbled under her breath. I pulled her even closer; cementing her body into mine. I began feeling heavier as I slowly succumb to the exhaustion that was taking me over. My breathing began to match hers; a slow gentle rhythm. I was finally home.
