The Box

The Box

A Poem by Alexis

My happiness arrived today! It only took a year to ship. You see, it took me months to gain the energy to order that box off of Amazon. And once I did it drained me to wait for it to turn up at my doorstep. But when it finally set itself in front of me....I was in denial. Me? Happy? Not possible. Yet I look at the package. The beauty of the box cannot compare to what lies inside. The craftsmen's careful hands once caressed this parcel and placed the happiness inside. So much time and effort put into one simple thing. Although I've waited so long for this moment, I cannot bring myself to open it. I label the package "what I don't deserve" and carefully set the forbidden box in the corner. For months it gathers dust and receives heartbroken glances. It soon sinks Itself back into the dark where I believe it belongs. -
-
My sadness arrived again! I try my best to barricade the doors, but the pessimistic box still shows up in my kitchen. The unwanted guest makes itself at home in my mind. It makes tea while I lug myself back to bed where I belong. I glare at the rotted box in the corner of the room. If only I would have opened it. If only. If only. if only. But i didn't.... The price I paid for denying myself the luxury of that box, was the unwanted darkness at my doorstep.
