Dear Dad

Dear Dad

A Poem by walker
"

its a journal entry... that's why the quotation marks are there

"
"dear dad..."

"couldn't take your hand, the one
you forced me away with.
I would say thank you
but you never helped with this,
you were the last one out,
without a whisper I never saw you.
without you I still had my nightmares.
time after time I would hear you shout.
rarely at her.
to us you always would.
now I wish I could say more
but I can't.
you didn't say anymore,
you didn't save anymore.
so now I'll take her hand and leave out the door.
for once I'm done with this poe,
just thought I should let you know."

where to start? the start was a punch right to the heart. and reader's can hear the echoes of hurt long before the refrain ricochet:
"you didn't say anymore,"
and while terse, the narrator, despite plaintive "for once I'm done with this".. adds a p.s. from the heart that still remains open however slim the glimmer of hope, "just thought I should let you know."
The narrator of the poem's voice and words sound like so many voices across genres and storytelling, the disconnect and alienation between father and son. Cat's in the cradle, full of longing and regret.
