Zombies'n'S**t Ep. 55A Chapter by wagonburnerDilemma
I thought about that for a moment. "Who is your brother?" She became visibly more interested as a sad smile played across her lips, "Brent is a lot like you, actually. Headstrong and boisterous." From behind me, Carl piped up, "Ya'mean moronic and loudmouthed?" I cast a withering glare at him, I hadn't realized he could hear our conversation, "Shaddap, you." Sophia giggled at him and nodded.
She settled down and said wistfully, "Pretty much like you." Her expression sank into a somber one, "He died fighting off a bunch of you guys, trying to save his girlfriend, Penny. You remember that girl that was being such a b***h? It was her little sister. Unfortunately, they were both killed. Francine blamed my brother, and by extension me, for the death of her sister." Sophia rolled over so her back was to me and remained silent. I returned to Carl and plopped down, he jabbed at a piece of debris and asked, "You just can't help screwing up, can you? First you get yourself captured, then you make friends with all the Normies." I flicked a rock at him. We stayed silent, for Sophia's sake, for several hours. We pretended not to hear the sobs emanating from the bundle she had made for herself. The fire crackled and hissed as water dripped down and the storm raged outside. Eventually, Carl looked up at me, "What are we gonna do, man? We can't take her back to the others, they'd tear her apart and sort it out afterwards." I nodded, soberly, "You're right about that. We could try to explain it to them before we bring her in." Carl shook his head. "No way. Who would believe you? I didn't, at first." I sighed and looked back at her sleeping form, "I struggled with it, too. But that's the thing, if we can get them to understand it like we do..." I trailed off, realizing just how hopeless that would be. Carl gave me a level look and muttered, "We could leave her." I started into the flames and stayed silent for several minutes, "We could. She wouldn't be safe without us and would, more than likely, die on her own. It's not our responsibility to keep her safe or anything. We just slip away while she is asleep and head back. Actually, we should do that. It's the best option for us right now." Carl flicked a splinter into the fire and muttered, "Yeah. Easiest and best for us. If that's true, why do I feel bad about even talking about abandoning her?" I knew what he was talking about. By all accounts, we should leave when she couldn't follow us and leave her to her fate. She brought it on herself, following me. Even with all the good reasons to leave, we couldn't. I looked up at the ceiling and growled, "Why can't we, then?" A voice slipped into the room from the door to outside, "Because you are good people, despite all your faults." We both rose quickly as I thought, I know that voice! © 2017 wagonburnerAuthor's Note
