Zombies'n'S**t Ep. 38

"

What IS Food?

"
One of these days, mark me, my mouth is going to get me in a heap of trouble.  Luckily dear Sophia had a sense of humor.  She laughed good-naturedly, gave a flick of her wrist and a flair of her hips.  She sat by the fire and I went to join her.

We sat by the fire in companionable silence for a time, until I broke the silence, "What's it like for you?  Being surrounded by us all the time."  She let out a breath and ran her fingers through her hair, obviously thinking out her answer.

"It's like being surrounded by wolves.  As long as we are out of reach, we're fine, but if we're discovered...."  She trailed off and stared into the small fire.  I was about to prompt her when she started speaking again in a hoarse whisper.  "Then it's like being on a small sinking raft surrounded by ravenous piranhas."  There was another long pause before she looked up at me with a wide smile, "That is, until now!"

I shifted uncomfortably.  I was hungry.

Shut up.

You get hungry too.

My expression must have given me away because she frowned at me, "What's wrong?"  I didn't say anything.  I didn't trust my mouth at the moment.  You know, like I expressed concern about earlier?  She repeated herself.  I shrugged and said, "Nothin'."  Master of witty banter, that's me.

"I don't believe you," she said.

She didn't believe me.  Big surprise.

I didn't look at her, "Look, I don't think it's important."

She rolled her eyes, "If that isn't a cry for help, I don't know what is."

I gave her my best scowl, but she seemed unfazed.  D****t.  Batteries on this thing must be going out.  Get it?  Like my scowl is powered by.............

Shut up.

I gave up on my scowl and admitted, "I'm hungry."  She nodded, "Ah.  So, like flesh, right?"  I was about to nod when a thought struck me.

"Y'know what?  No.  Do you have any food?"  She thought for a moment then reached into her pocket and fished out a half-eaten candy bar and offered it to me.  It had been in her pocket throughout our chase and had been dunked in the water when we went for a swim.

Eh, I've had worse.  I gingerly took it and popped it in my mouth.  It tasted.....unusual.  I don't know how to describe it.  It wasn't anything about the water that tasted unusual.  It was the chocolate.  I had never had chocolate before.

I noticed she was watching me and trying to hide a grin behind her hand.

"MMMh,"  I said.

"You're not supposed to eat the wrapper, knucklehead!" She chortled.

I always smile at least once with these short chapters, and this time it was at the very end with realizing he thought the wrapper was what was supposed to taste good but didn't really. Great reveal.
