The InternetA Chapter by Wendy Seames GarnerMy thoughts on how the Internet has changed my life. When I first heard they were going to create a World Wide Web, I couldn't conceive what they were talking about. I certainly never would have believed the Internet would be something I would use on a daily basis. Now, I find myself on the Internet several times a day. The first thing I do every morning, is to check my three e-mail accounts, log in my Coke points, download free embroidery designs, and then head on over to Facebook where I will spend several minutes catching up with all my “Friends.” Immediately following dinner every night, my husband and I get out our laptops for our nightly session of dueling computers and our endless search for the end of the Internet. Sometimes, if I'm not too busy, I go on the Internet in the afternoon as well. Who knew the Internet would become so important to our everyday lives?
I had a revelation the other day, while reading the posts of Facebook “Friends” whom I hadn't really interacted with personally in years. The creepy feeling that I was stalking them, couldn't be denied. People sometimes write such personal things on Facebook, do they really want me to know all their inner feelings? Do they get carried away, forgetting that these thoughts are pretty much open to the world? After all, they are typing from the privacy of their homes, often in their pajamas; probably no one else in the room with them. I'm just as guilty. Maybe we human beings just have a need to broadcast, “Look at me world!”
Facebook is a major Internet force. Families can easily keep in contact with each other, no matter where in the world they live. You can reconnect with long lost friends on Facebook. Even perfect strangers can become the best of friends using the Internet. I made a wonderful friend on Facebook. We grew up in the same small town, lived just blocks away from each other, but never met. She has been living in North Carolina for several years now. When we both received a Facebook invitation to our class reunion, I replied that I wouldn't attend and she tried to encourage me to come. That was last year, this year she drove all the way to Michigan and we met for the first time. We have so much in common, I can't believe it took us all these years to find each other. Without the Internet, we never would have met!
Good or bad, The Internet is here to stay and I am glad. OK, I admit it, I am addicted to the Internet! Is there a twelve-step program for Internet addiction? © 2012 Wendy Seames GarnerFeatured Review
