Firemen

Firemen

A Poem by Josh Clifton

Sitting around a table
A game of cards at hand
Its the middle of the night
When the alarm rings out its command

The men spring to their feet
Their uniforms go on with haste
Down a pole each one slides
For they don't have time to waste

Through the streets they race
The siren wails as the lights flash
Making their way to the scene
Using safety to prevent a crash

Hoses are unraveled
As hydrants are tapped
These men are trained to handle danger
Well equipped to react and adapt

As water is sprayed at the blaze
Turning a firey red to charcoal black
These brave souls enter the structure
And begin their attack

Removing fallen and scattered debris
With axes they clear the way
They search for helpless people
In this house of disarray

As the remaning fire turns to ash
Another building stands upright
Its inhabitants safely outdoors
Shaken but safe tonight

This is a very well done tribute to these brave men. I love how you've not only captured the emergency, but the life of a fireman as well ... it made them seem more real. Very nice.

This is a super tribute! Our firefighters have a very thankless job and they could use all the support they can get. In most parts of the country even the world the firefighters are VOLUNTEERS. They don't even get paid to do the risky work they do. This was fantastic!

This is nicely written ... I like how the rythm picks up in the second stanza, paces well. Best wishes, Bethlynne.

I love it and you're right firefighters don't get enough recognition everyone has a tendency to overlook them. I think you did an excellent job with this and my firefighter friends would be proud of you!

This is a wonderful tribute to firefighters, Josh. I have an intimate friend whose son was a firefighter;
in an attempt to rescue a family from angry flames, his hands were severely burned and scarred.
These men and woman truly deserve recognition, for they must be ready to serve...anytime...anyplace.
Your vivid imagery captures the mood brilliantly.

You have a talent for telling a story with your poetry, Josh. A heartfelt and well deserved tribute...and I like this name better than the one you wore for a few hours the other day! :) Lydia
