The Burden of Being a Twin

The Burden of Being a Twin

A Poem by Vanessa
"

The first thing people usually say when it is learned that I am a twin is "Wow, that's so cool! I wish I had a twin." It is cool, however there are issues that go along with it that may not be understood.

"

The Burdens of Being a Twin

I was born

a person in half,

one part of a whole.

With her,

I had to share contours

and at times a soul.

Each day I struggled

with the purpose to divide

myself from her,

erasing the half of my side.

This is a very interesting perspective from a twin. It must be very hard to establish your own identy and individuality. I was friends with two sets of twins in my younger days and each person wanted their own identity. It was hard for them because alot of people lumped them together all the time.
Expressive ink on your part to make people think.. that just because you are born at the same time or look alike does it mean that you are the same person..

Your words ring with truth and wanting. We are born with enough challenges in life, having to carve out a separate identity surly adds to the burden. You express it very well. I am a twin, though we are not identical. I think that saved us from having to separate. We were our own person, from the beginning.
