Smoke

Smoke

A Poem by volleywriter15
"

A retrospective on past relationships that live on in your brain, regardless of whether or not you want them to

"

I sit alone at a bus stop

As dusk fades to night

Though the sky has long been filled

With inky blackness

And the rain has been falling for hours

I sit alone at a bus stop

And watch the droplets fall

And be my stand-in stars

As tonight the sky is too far away

To see those points of distant light

I sit alone on a bus

It reeks of cigarette smoke

As if the puffs of hot air leaving my lungs

Had as much nicotine as your lips

I sit alone on a bus

And I think of you

How in the end, you were nothing

Nothing but cigarette smoke and broken promises

You made me feel dizzy,

Made my head spin

You made me crave more

And when I first tried to quit you,

I thought I needed you

You filled up every space,

Even when you were not invited

Signs of you linger for days

Even after you leave

You overstay your welcome

But I don’t recall inviting you

In the first place

You may be smoke

But baby I’m the whole goddamn fire

And not even a hurricane can but me out
