Feather

Feather

A Poem by Jemima Laing

Inspiration is like a feather

Every frantic, grasping leap

Only pushes it farther away

After a while you sigh in defeat

Your mind is too tired to care

And right before you call it a day

The feather falls right in your lap

You sit and stare in a befuddled daze

Because you have no idea what to do

Inspiration is like a feather

That must be treated with care

If you hold it loosely it slips away

If you clutch too tightly it crumples

If you force it to do your bidding

You distort it beyond recognition

I can feel the need to write building

But I can't think of what to say

It's a wonderfully painful limbo

Where the brain tries to think

And the heart tries to compete

Each vying for dominance

And neither helping me in the least
