Little Things

Little Things

A Poem by Jemima Laing

It’s the little things in life that matter

I’m sure you’ve all heard that cliché

But just think back on your bad day

What cheered you up?

Was it big?

I bet it wasn’t.

I bet it was small.

Your cat happy to see you

at the end of the day

or your dog just wanting to play.

Someone made a joke in class

and made you laugh.

The person you never noticed,

noticed you and did something stupid

just to make you smile.

Your son, your daughter

they finally got along.

Or maybe it was the happiness of others

on that terrible day.

The one little thing

that we should all celebrate

are the other people in our lives

even if they’re the ones you dislike.

For even the scrooges

need companionship.

They just don’t want to say

“I need somebody”

So help ‘em out

we all need each other.

Me and you

all of us together.
