I am you

I am you

A Poem by Jemima Laing

I am you, you are me

Both for all eternity

Eagles soar above the mountains, shrieking defiance for all to hear,

but none can in that empty air.

A buck tussles with a tree

for velvet adorns his antlers

and it itches annoyingly.

Nearby the hunter watches,

waiting for the moment to strike

The small pup waits watching, learning

so it can one day hunt too

At home the tanner makes a hide

from the skin he found in the forest

It’s not much but it will do

‘cause beggars can’t be choosers.

Far away in a shop filled with curiosities

stands a girl with a hide

she does not need it

but she likes it, so she buys it.

the father sits at his desk working hard for his daughter to get the very best

The mother looks on worriedly

for unlike him

she thinks the daughter needs less

not more

The maid sighs and cleans,

watching the silent battle

that seemed to last for centuries.

Straightening up the gardener grins for he loves nothing more than his plants, and cares not for the trouble upstairs

as long as he gets his paycheck.

And so it is that the world goes around,

you and me, everybody.

Easy pleasure or hard earned

it can bring happiness or sadness.

Who can tell?
