Let's not objectify

Let's not objectify

A Poem by Jemima Laing

I like talking in third person
I think it is fun and exciting
But people look at you in a weird way
it makes you think
You realize that people can’t accept deviation
Oh sure you can be spastic
or say random things
you can even be mean
We’ll still accept you for who you are

But if you’re mean you can’t be nice
and if you’re a Goth you can’t be happy
You can be funny or sad, silent or mad.
You can be the bookworm
or homecoming queen

But watch out
‘cause if you differ from the norm
then people give you that weird look and walk away
I really don’t understand
but I’m not the one to accuse; I do it too.
So why do we do it?
Can we not handle change?
Is it really so hard to think on our own
I think it's sad
that so many are unwilling to stand out

So look at this poem and tell me what you see.
But what ever you do
don’t look to others and don’t look to me.
Instead, look with your own eyes
let your personality shine through

Turn it left or right I don’t care.
I know it won’t be a problem if you are just true to you.
Make the most of what you are.
I will try too.
I’ll be my own person,
let’s see where it gets us.
Let’s not objectify.
