A Poem by Jemima Laing

Leaves whisper like footsteps as they fall

Dew gathers on the grass, a raven sees all

A small chickadee chastises the raven

For intruding so rudely on her haven

I sit with my elbows on my knees

Laughing to myself, as easy as you please

A  yellow eye regards me with contempt

I laugh all the more at his failed attempt

Ignoring me completely, a thing to tolerate

The raven regards his attacker at present rate

Refusing to kowtow and retreat

She stands alone in the face of certain defeat

Confidence in every line of his body

Raven struts his ebony feathers, all haughty

With deft speed the chickadee strikes

I feel my heart rate spike

A black dot is all I can see

As Raven flies off without victory
