There's a Fine, Fine Line

Kyle was probably right. Joey pulled out his phone and dialed.

 

"Hello?" 

 

He almost gave up when he heard her voice, he didn't know what to say. "Jeanie? Hi."

 

"Hang on a sec."

 

Did she literally mean a second, or was she running away? "Uh. Okay. How are you?"

 

"Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Just hang on a second." Jeanie finished up what she was typing.

 

"Okay. Sorry. Who's this?"

 

Joey felt a little hurt that she didn't know. "Joey Logano."

 

Jeanie was tempted to hang up. "What?"

 

"I'm sorry."

 

Jeanie took a deep breath but didn't say anything.

 

"I know you don't wanna talk to me. Please, hear me out? The thing I said before I left, I don't know what was wrong with me. I'm sorry."

 

"Look, it's water under the bridge." Jeanie half-lied. "It didn't work out, so whatever."

 

"No." He took a breath. "Please. I really wanna try again. I miss you."

 

"I've got to be honest. I just don't think so."

 

"We can't even be friends?"

 

"I don't think so."

 

"Okay. I'm sorry for any way I've hurt you. Hope everything goes well for you. And, uh, yeah. Goodbye."

 

Jeanie bit her lip, she didn't really know what to say. She didn't hang up until she heard him hang up first. Then she chucked her phone onto the floor. That woke the baby up, Annaleigh started screaming.

 

"I feel the same." Jeanie said as she picked the baby up and began to rock her. Why did he call? Things were almost fine.

 

"Saaa" Annaleigh murmured.

 

"I guess I am sad." Jeanie affirmed.

 

"Fuuu" Annaleigh added. Jeanie shoved a bottle in Annaleigh's mouth. "Awrfg."

Jeanie picked her phone off the floor. She tried not to cry as she dialed.

 

"Hello?....Hello?" 

 

"I kind of lied." Jeanie blurted out. "I do miss talking to you."

 

"Jeanie! Thanks for calling me back. I was so scared we were over."

 

Jeanie wiped away a few tears. "You really hurt my feelings. I haven't let the happen in awhile. It's hard for me."

 

"I know I did. I'm really sorry. I'm going to make it right." Joey swore to her.
